Goat's bass player says:
"To me, the reggae disco 45 is the ultimate format of the genre. No filler material as opposed to albums. No flippin' sides after just three minutes as opposed to the 7". The art of the mixing engineer gets time to shine without taking anything away from the vocal version. Because it's all there. Enough room for every aspect of the track to be explored. Also, usually great sounding because of the mastering possibilities of the 12" 45 rpm format."
Chris says:
"The Reggae 12" section in second-hand record shops always seemed way too daunting to me, so I used to skip straight past it and head for the Reggae/Dub LPs instead. All those generic disco sleeves made it feel like such a difficult section to trawl through and take in.
That all changed when I heard and bought Keith Hudson's Nah Skin Up 12" mix. I loved hearing a track I already knew take on a whole new life as a sprawling seven-minute-plus version. It completely piqued my curiosity, so I started digging a little deeper into this 'extended' world.
Not long after, I got chatting to the bass player from GOAT about Reggae 12"s, knowing he was a bit of a connoisseur and had been collecting them for many, many years. He really opened this world fully up to me, starting with a handful of incredible recommendations that some I have managed to track down. Since then, I've become a bit obsessed with the Reggae 12" format. Now, whenever I walk into a record shop, the first thing I do is make a beeline for the Reggae 12" section, and the bigger it is, the better.
So for Episode 5 of our 'Out Of The Void' ROVR mix I asked Goat's bass player to send me some vinyl rips of some 12"s he would like to include in a mix. Obviously he sent me several hours worth of tracks, so I picked out an hours worth, plus an hours worth from my 12" collection, and mixed it together to create this, 'Part 1' of Reggae 12" tracks."
