Spot Land’s five songs are tender and detailed, unfolding slowly with wistful guitar textures, brushed drums and interjections of lap steel, piano and kalimba.

As founder member Paddy Shine says, the results sound like old GNOD and new GNOD at the same time. On the face of it, Spot Land is a big step away from the intense, loud, sludgy offerings found on the group’s more recent studio albums, such as 2022’s Hexen Valley – nevertheless, these too are heady fogs to lose yourself in, with on-record personnel starting at different points and meeting on the same wavelength. Its exploratory sense might make seasoned GNOD heads think of 2014 triple LP Infinity Machines, or really early oddities like The Somnambulist’s Tale from 2008, but you can also jump in right here if needs be because Spot Land has its own unique vibe too.

The album was recorded in a Rochdale mill over four days in August 2023, with Paddy handling all the production and mixing – the first time he’s been fully in the hot seat for any GNOD release. He’s also the only member to feature on each of the five tracks, with others coming and going in suitably informal manner. Everyone – Paddy, fellow GNOD founder Chris Haslam, Alex Macarte, Raikes Parade and Al Wilson – plays at least two instruments over these 40 minutes. There are no vocal credits among them, but Spot Land is embellished beautifully by sampled voices, notably on the album’s opening and closing pieces. Benedictine monks intone hymnally on ‘Peace At Home’, gliding over the top of jazzy, graceful desert music, while during quarter-hour ambient rock frazzler ‘Pilgrim’s Progress’ we hear – yes – Christian pilgrims chanting in a church in Azores.

These songs are unquestionably the product of jamming, improvisation and an open mind, with little of any of what you hear having much in the way of a preconceived structure, but don’t imagine this to be self-indulgent or bloated, thanks especially to Paddy’s judicious editing process. ‘Luz Natural’ is a beatific beatless wonder crafted from synth, piano and lap steel, a soundtrack for a rainforest located somewhere along the Pennines. ‘Dream On’ is Spot Land’s most rhythm-forward moment, alien-sounding synths snaking through sharply shuffling bass and drums, whereas ‘Kapal Bhati’ is its height of abstraction: thumb piano, bizarro dub treatment and distant voices that could be anyone, from anywhere.

Though GNOD’s shift in sound from album to album is rarely planned too far ahead, there’s been a quiet desire among the band to do something of this nature for a while. The results might confound the expectations of some listeners, but in the longer view Spot Land is liquid GNOD. The arresting cover artwork is a showcase for Chris Haslam’s illustrative skills; his process here, he says, was “starting on something, never knowing when it’s complete, just when it feels finished. Like the music, really.”

The grace and NOISE of GNOD INVITES YOU TO join them for :

ORDER OF SERVICE:

Sermon 1 TONY’S FIRST COMMUNION

Sermon 2 VATICAN

Brothers and sisters, to prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries of Gnod, let us call to mind our sins.

We believe in one Gnod, Gnod Almighty makers of heavy black slab on Earth.

We believe in one Chord, seamless, sublime, the one and only sound of Gnod, eternally begotten of the marcher.

Gnod from Gnod, light from light, true Gnod from true Gnod, begotten, not made, of one Being with the maker; through Them all riffs were played.

For us and for our salvation They came down from Manchester; by the power of Tony’s (un)limit, They came to reincarnate and made the last disco’d beat.

Tony’s First Communion, if you choose to be blessed by this record, is the first reception of the Sacrament on vinyl; this long-standing favourite has been celebrated over centuries of incarnations and Rocket are proud to release its rite of passage.

The ceremony of this Communion lasts 20 minutes and 2 seconds.

On the second side Gnod rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; They ascended into noise upon this Earth and were seated at the right hand of the Vatican.

This 13 minute holy doctrine sees Gnod take away the sins of the world; it cleanses the incense (the in-sense-out-sense) from the all seeing (third) eye, like a Faustian Butthole Surfers sharing bread with Shit & Shine and John Carpenter turning water into wine.

Some ceremonies owe their institution to purely physical reason; for Gnod it’s the mystical reason that They represent. Operating from their base camp and spiritual home, the legendary Islington Mill - a venue, art-space and liminal zone in Salford: A space that has allowed the band the freedom to stubbornly pursue their own free-flowing aesthetic in a judgement free environment. ‘Infinity Machines’, their fifth release for Rocket Recordings, and the latest for this prolific outfit in a vibrant and diverse history, is no less than a pinnacle of achievement for a band who exist beyond all or any reductive genre pigeonholes, not to mention beyond the constraints of the everyday. A triple-album, it explores a unique vision informed by experimental élan and metaphysical intensity.

Its in Gnod’s nature to forge forth in search of new and expanded sonic terrain, at first this led them to pursue a purely electronic sound in the
live arena, yet as they knuckled down to chronicle this expansion and experimentation for posterity, it became clear that a mixture of live instrumentation and binary audial research would be the path that would prove most fruitful. Thus began the process that would ultimately produce these recordings, and a far-reaching mission which would result in uncanny crepuscular atmosphere locking horns with sinister electronic intensity.

‘Infinity Machines’ traverses between and beyond a variety of different headspaces from the bleak to the beatific – yet whilst touching on nocturnal jazz, soothing yet unsettling ambience, menacing aggro-industrial battery and opiated bliss-out alike, it’s shot through with an undercurrent of fiery countercultural zeal and small-hours revelation, as if the hive-mind of their home collective had manifested itself on six sides of wax.

Tracks were put together from an initial blank canvas, and as the band themselves emphasize, “We got pretty tactical in the approach. We have certainly noticed that the emphasis has shifted from full on ‘throw everything at it’ Gnod vibes to a more stripped spacious sound which was not fully intentional but more of a natural progression” Spoken word contributions, many from Islington Mill inhabitants and seers, vie for attention with gridlike and vicious beats, synapse-shifting modular synthesis, field recordings. and even the hitherto unheard appearance of saxophone and electric piano textures. As Gnod put it. “We really like the idea of a Rhodes and sax on a Gnod record, because to most people those instruments are pure cheese, but we think they are pure soul”.

This 110-minute opus, fearless in spirit and limitless in scope, documents the unstoppable motion of an iconoclastic force beyond the comprehension of the unenlightened. Lyrically it deals with mental health issues and how things like social media are a vehicle for our split personalities and egos - that and being under the thumb of forces and power structures we can't really fully understand, or even if we understand them we feel helpless to change the situation. Yet recording in Supernova studio in Eindhoven under the auspices of Bob De Wit, the band found themselves free not only to lay down two tumultuous tracks that they had been honing and hammering into shape on the road - the pulverising fifteen-minute opener ‘Donovan’s Daughters’ and the bracingly brutal ‘Uncle Frank Says Turn It Down’ - but to sculpt more abstract material, utilising dubbed-out repetition, furious riff-driven rancour, bleak soundscapes and off-the-map experimentation to create an intimidating and invigorating tableau of dystopian dread and unflinching intensity.

Always working purely on their own instincts and co-ordinates, Gnod’s pathway into unchartered territory continues to move firmly on with nary a care for the sanity of anyone in their surroundings. Most weekends from Friday to Sunday we were in the rehearsal room together, experimenting with equipment, setting up mad pedal chains, plugging things into other things and just plain old jamming. As Paddy Shine of Gnod notes: “I think the title sums it up well because this album was coming together at a time when confusion was king for us all - still is. I think we can all relate to that. This record is a really strange beast because of the big change that happened between mixing and recording. I think the title really does sum up the vibe of ‘What the Fuck’? Maybe we should have called it that!”

Wielding the taut, stripped-down and bludgeoning sound that had evolved on 2017’s ‘Just Say No The Psycho Right-Wing Capitalist Fascist Industrial Death Machine’ and 2018’s Chapel Perilous, Gnod initially recorded the tracks for ‘La Mort Du Sens’ with key soundman and collaborator Raikes Parade in ‘an old mill in Manchester’ around the Christmas period of 2019. “It’s the first album in a while where we kept it in-house and DIY, and we wanted it to be as ferocious as our live sets have become” says Paddy, “We banged it all down live - two drummers and a load of cabs in a room pushing each other forward”

Nonetheless, the arrival of the pandemic in early 2020 took the record on another course, adding to a turbulent and cathartic vitality that electrifies the likes of the caustic Melvins-in-hell assault of ‘Pink Champagne Blues’, the uncompromising percussive battering ram of the twelve-minute ‘Giro Day’ and the post-punk angularity of ‘The Whip And The Tongue’ with a fearsome elemental charge. “The world changed two months later so we were mixing this old world record in the new world and a lot of the vox got laid down during lockdown” reflects Paddy. “‘Pink Champagne Blues’ is a burst of total nihilist abandon and the lyrics wrote themselves in the midst of a dark wintry night of the soul”

Masters of an approach which manages to be both unmistakable and unpredictable. It’s an area of West Yorkshire that extends roughly between Manchester and Leeds across a landscape rugged in aspect and rich in allure. Todmorden, a town within in, has been home to so many UFO sightings that it’s been dubbed ‘The UK”s Roswell’. Sylvia Plath and Emily Brontë were galvanised by its raw beauty. And it’s where Gnod came together to create Hexen Valley.

The formation of Hexen Valley began in summer 2021 when Gnod’s Paddy Shine moved to Hebden Bridge to join fellow protagonists Chris Haslam and Jesse Webb in a co-op house at the 200-year-old Nutclough Tavern. As has been the case since the formation of Gnod, the line-up of the collective shifted and morphed to fit circumstances - soon they were joined by fellow Nutclough resident Richard Chamberlain on guitar, and in the Hebden Bridge Underground rehearsal studio the four soon began intensive jamming in which certain distinct songs and themes began to emerge. These were eventually captured by Sam Greenwood in the same studio, with the whole project taking place in both this physical location and its companion headspace.

Inspiration struck not only from the chemistry of the four musicians in this confined room but all around - Shine cites the likes of shop noticeboard messages and pub conversations in Hebden as lyrical sparks; channeling by his reckoning the ‘valley fever’ that exists somewhere in the chasms and contrasts between the amazing light and vivacity of the valley summit and the comparative darkness of the towns below.

Meanwhile, musical shapes were making themselves known seemingly of their own volition - Haslam shifting back to bass for this setup led to the colossal low-end groove which underpins the monstrous 12-minute album centrepiece ‘Spotlight’. ‘Antidepressants’ in turn sprang from a mantra chanted at Nutclough to a fully-fledged exercise in aural overload. ‘Still Runnin’’ takes shape across a sonic hinterland between Daydream Nation-style kineticism and sludged-out aggression.

Opener ‘Bad Apple’ was an entirely spontaneous piece of in-studio magic which evolved from a spidery guitar line of Chamberlain into a piece of potent and angular post-punk intensity. And perhaps most surprisingly of all, Lou Reed’s tour-bus favourite ‘Waves Of Fear’ is jammed out with fearsome gusto into a piece of first-take catharsis and alchemy, fit to transcend all or any oppressive atmospheres that surround.

The previous Gnod line-up - minus Chamberlain but including bassist Alex Macarte, drummer John Perry and soundman Raikes Parade - reunited for an overwhelmingly positive and successful UK tour in late 2021, and the journey continues. Yet Hexen Valley marks another distinct chapter in this iconoclastic mission.

Hexen Valley is where a monolithic sonic force - charged by the energy of its surroundings -makes contact with other realms. Inner Fucking Peace comprises eight tracks for voice and electronics – varied in style but connected in feeling, and recorded as a trio. Chris Haslam and Paddy Shine, the two ever-present members in the Gnod lineup since their first stirrings in mid-2000s Salford, are completed by Portuguese vocalist MC Sissi.

Inner Fucking Peace is the first time Sissi, or Cecilia de Fatima dos Santos, has recorded with Gnod. Already a known name in Portuguese experimental circles, she and Paddy met in early 2022 on an artists’ residency near the northern Portugal/Spain border. It was an inspirational experience deep in the mountains, a cavalcade of surrealist occurrences and psychomagic activity worthy of cult film director Alejandro Jodorowsky (a fave of Paddy and Sissi both, as it happens). At the end of it, the pair got married in Porto, and now live together in Ireland, where they recorded their parts of this album – exchanging ideas digitally with Chris, who recorded the eerie synth frameworks in his Hebden Bridge studio.

With Paddy building drum patterns on Chris’ tracks, Sissi’s contribution wasn’t even in the script. As these instrumentals were being tweaked one Irish evening, she picked up a mic and started to freestyle some vocals over the top: dramatic narration, mournful crooning, heck a little autotune... one take for the whole lot and a whole new dimension to the album. The lyrics are all in Portuguese, but don’t worry if you don’t know what Sissi’s singing about – neither does she. It’s fully stream-of-consciousness, reacting to the music in real time.

So from the minimalist tuned percussion of ‘Stop’, to the shuffling beats and spaced-out synth on ‘Perde-Te Onde Quiseres’, to ‘Get Out’ and its ominous electronics and crashing industrial drums (combined with Sissi’s irate-sounding vocal, here Gnod are on a tip that compares to great Bristolian duo and recent touring partners Harrga), to the supremely chopped and screwed woodwind that’s central to ‘Flute Theme’, to ‘Reprise’s hypnotic handdrum workout, to ‘Tea and Eggs’ – ten minutes of reggaeton-gone-minimal-synth – to ‘Olivia’, named after Sissi’s niece and the track’s guest vocalist (she’s eleven years old now, but a baby on this recording), to ‘Cannela Crematoria’ closing us out and hitting a zenith of gloominess with some more industrial battery folded in… this is a full on Gnod vibe shift that also makes total sense in their infamously extensive discography.

With this band enjoying hard-won freedom from release schedule tyranny, they – just like us – don’t know what’s next on the recording agenda, or if there’ll be more Gnod and MC Sissi collab albums, but this is an engrossing introduction to the partnership. The end result has been three studio albums to be released over the next year. “This trilogy revealed itself to us in the studio” says Paddy. “We were hoping to get a good album out of the session and lo and behold we got three of the fuckers.
